Scenario
Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, and director Todd Phillips share what scared them most about approaching the musical sequel. . The film’s subtitle, « Folie a Deux »; means « the madness of two » in French. This initially led to speculation that Harley Quinn would appear in the film, which was soon confirmed. The name Folie a Deux comes from 19th-century French psychiatrists Charles Lasègue and Jules Falret.

The term was coined to refer to two or more people who share the same madness or delusion. This is also known as Lasègue-Falret Syndrome. The jury chairman refers to « People of New York »; instead of Gotham City. This is because New York State is the plaintiff in the criminal case, and this version of Gotham City is of course located in New York State (most versions place Gotham in New Jersey). Merrily We Roll Along, written by Eddie Cantor, Murray Mencher, and Charles Tobias. Joker 2 attempts to return to the mind of Arthur Fleck, but unfortunately treads too much of the same ground as the first film. The original Joker was such a meticulous and thorough character study that by the end it felt like there wasn’t much left to discover. That’s exactly the feeling that haunts this sequel, which struggles to find new dimensions in Arthur’s complex psyche, making the film feel more like an epilogue than a fresh narrative. Joaquin Phoenix, as expected, is excellent as Arthur Fleck, further cementing his unsettling portrayal of the Joker. Lady Gaga also adds depth to her role as Harley Quinn, adding a new dynamic to Arthur’s story.
the toxic relationship between Joker and Harley
However, the film continually detracts from their strong performances with unnecessary musical numbers and courtroom drama that feels out of place. Ironically, the film is at its best when it harkens back to the iconic scenes and atmosphere of the first film, rather than when it tries to experience new elements. The nods to Arthur’s lonely and troubled journey in the original film evoke the same incredible tension and emotional weight that made Joker so powerful. However, the attempts to add new layers with courtroom drama and out-of-nowhere musical sequences ultimately disrupt the flow of the story, feeling more like a distraction than a meaningful addition. The chemistry between Phoenix and Gaga adds a compelling layer to the film, but unfortunately, these moments are too few and far between. Ultimately, Joker 2 feels like a sequel without much to say.
For fans of the original, it may feel redundant, offering little new insight into Arthur’s character or the world he inhabits
While it has its highlights, especially in terms of the performances, the film feels like an unnecessary add-on to the first film rather than a compelling new chapter.
