Elwood Curtis’ college dream is shattered along a two-lane highway in Florida. Suffering the brunt of an innocent misstep, he is condemned to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory deeply embedded in the Jim Crow South. He encounters another hall, the all-seeing Turner. Two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares survival tips, Elwood clings to his optimistic view of the world. Against the backdrop of the nascent civil rights movement, Elwood and Turner appear worlds away from the polished oratory of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s cruelty, Elwood tries to retain his humanity, giving Turner a new perspective.
