A Montana ranching family battles other invaders on their land. Forrie J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to the SoCal voice he normally uses.

(Review is for the first two seasons only) I went into this series not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are top-notch. Basically, it’s Montana mob wars with massive, intermittent doses of testosterone (gun-wielding cowboys on horses while fishing)! Costner is a master actor in the lead role of The Duttons.

The series gets stuck in the beginning of the second season, but starts to pick up again in the middle. Kelsey Asbille is Monica’s weakest link and plays her role poorly, the plot is clumsily abandoned and the acting just misses the mark. I think Cole Hauser as Rip might be the best actor (aside from Costner himself) and I looked forward to every scene Rip was in.
Thomas Rainwater is also great
The story is vibrant and the scenery is gorgeous. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s “All The Pretty Horses” was a bit more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this series follows in the same vein. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
